Two days ago Nippon Ichi Software – the company famous for video game franchises such as Disgaea (my favourite dood), Persona, Danganronpa and Etrian Odyssey will be halting distribution in Europe.
In a statement given to MCV, Takuro Yamashita – the Managing director of NIS America – had this to say;
“Around ten days ago, we terminated our alliance with Atlus in Europe and the US.”
He went on to explain that “Atlus became very picky about selecting the European publishing partner after it was bought by Sega. It always cherry picked its EU publishing partner based on who offered the highest minimum guarantee on a title by title basis. I noticed that it was very difficult for NIS America to establish an equal-partnership with Atlus”.
Yamashita acknowledged the shared history between the two companies, and stated that “Atlus and its European games have contributed a lot to the expansion of NIS America in Europe. I would like to express my greatest appreciation to them for that.”
With this bombshell fans are left wondering what will happen to the upcoming release of Persona 5 – especially after the 5/5 countdown hype. It would be a bitter pill for European fans to swallow if the release was cancelled. At the moment it looks like the final game NIS America will be publishing with Atlus in Europe is “Odin Sphere: Leifthrasir” on the 24th of June 2016.
However not all is lost. We look to our beloved Sega to see if they will bring Persona to Europe. They failed us for Shenmue but perhpas they will see some profilt in the Persona series…I hope.
