Southwark Playhouse announces the world premiere of a brand new theatrical adaptation of Eiko Kadono’s bestselling, award-winning book KIKI’S DELIVERY SERVICE for Christmas 2016.
Anime fans would recognise this title as a Studio Ghibli animation that starred the voice of a young Kirsten Stewart. One of the most recognised animations from Hayao Miyazaki.
Adapted for the stage by Jessica Siân. Directed by Kate Hewitt, the play is running from Thursday 8 December 2016 till Sunday 8 January 2017, a great tale to watch around Christmas time. We follow witch in training, Kiki, who is just 13 years old when she has come to age to leave her home to embark the coming of age tradition to find her own settlement and witch powers. Equipped with her mother’s broomstick and Jiji the cat she sets off to a shakey adventure not quite mastering her flight ability.
Best way to class the genre of the play would be family fantasy with themes of growing up and finding acceptance; Kiki’s Delivery Service is a story for everyone for 10 + so a great family favourite and for anime fans.
The Southwark Playhouse’s previous Christmas shows have included: Usagi Yojimbo (2014), Anansi: An African Fairly Tale (2010) and another Studio Ghibli recreation Howl’s Moving Castle (2012).
